Scrappy Pineapple #3

This 49”x64” lap sized pineapple quilt is made similar to the first two with the difference being in the border that frames all the pineapple blocks. This time I chose to surround the outer edge with diamonds. Once again I used a colorful assortment of Civil War Reproduction style cotton print fabrics. The previous two quilts can be seen on this blog with the first one showing details in the block construction. This quilt sold on http://www.eBay.com.

I chose to back this quilt with a fun red and white leaf design print fabric typical of the era. The machine quilting is an all over edge to edge abstract design done in a taupe color thread.

Sampler Puzzle #3

The first two quilts sold rather quickly so I thought I’d make another one. I’ve stayed with using the Civil War Reproduction style fabrics,I love the rich assortment of colors they offer. Once again I made a variety of block styles and sizes and put them together in a puzzle layout. This lap sized quilt measures 46”x55” and I have included a 2” hanging sleeve for anyone who might like to hang it. This quilt sold via private sale.

String Stars

Being a frugal New Englander,I couldn’t let a single scrap go to waste with this one. While making other quilts in this palate,I was piling up the scraps from trimming patches and saw how lovely all the colors looked and wondered what could I do with them. I remembered the method of string piecing and thought I’d make an old time looking quilt. I’m really pleased with how this one turned out. This large lap sized quilt measuring 54”x70” sold on eBay. I liked this one so much that I’m saving my scraps to make another one. Maybe blue sashing next time?

It all starts with the scraps and this pile was only the beginning. The next step was to cut paper into shapes of what I wanted for patches. The paper is cut to the exact shape I need and will be the foundation on which I will sew the scraps together.

The fabric strips are sewn to the paper foundation in a flip and sew method. The strips extend beyond the paper edges to insure complete coverage. Once I have finished sewing the strips of fabric to the paper foundation and I’m happy with the coverage,I then remove the paper. It has done it’s job helping me create the shaped patch. Before using a plexiglass template to trim the patches to size,I made sure everything was pressed flat.

I arraigned the diamond patches into six point stars. These stars were sewn together with background patches and that created the finished block. Twelve of these blocks were then sashed with a bubble gum pink print style fabric popular back in the 1800’s. This makes for a colorful and lively quilt I really like and enjoyed making.I machine quilted this in an all over abstract design with a taupe thread then finished the quilt with a dark navy binding.

Cigar Store

Working with busy prints can sometimes lead to surprising results. I’ve seen kaleidoscope quilts made the “Stack n’ Slice” way and thought I’d give it a try. This 55”x70” quilt was tricky but fun to make. I started by finding the repeat of this cigar advertising collage fabric. The next step was to cut six same size pieces then stack them exactly on top of each other. The stack was secured with random thread tacks to keep it all in place. This quilt ended up being a truly unique piece and sold on http://www.eBay.com.

With the fabric stacked and tacked I then cut strips wide enough so they could be cut into the triangles needed for the blocks. I ended up with a lot of triangle sets with each having six exact pieces. I then arraigned each set into a block I thought looked good.

Once I had enough blocks sewn, I arranged them and added a black print fabric to off set them. The blocks were put together in rows easily by using those black triangles.

I think the result is a smashing quilt! The process was surprisingly easy once I got the layers all lined up and secured. I would probably make another one with another style of fabric.

I saved enough uncut fabric to use as the backing. I machine quilted this one in an all over edge to edge abstract design with black thread.

Scrappy Pineapple #2

I’m loving working with these 100% cotton Civil War Reproduction style fabrics, the palette is so colorful and warm. The first pineapple quilt sold quickly so I thought I’d make another one. This one was made the same as the first, only this time I changed the style of the outer border. This quilt also measures a nice lap size of 48”x64”. See “Scrappy Pineapple” on this blog for details in construction. This quilt sold the same day it was listed on http://www.eBay.com.

Different style borders

I quilted this one with a slightly different style of all over, edge to edge design with a taupe thread.
