Red Log Cabin

This queen sized (88”x104”) log cabin quilt was fun to make for a long distance customer. The color palette was from interest in my pineapple quilts with their Civil War Reproduction fabrics. We corresponded via email to decide on all the choices involved in making this quilt. Part of the fun was that correspondence!

One of the choices was, what color to use as the “chimney” or the very center patch of the block. Red is one of the traditional colors used in these quilts and I think this looks terrific especially with the red border pulling it all together. I precut all the “logs” to length to insure block accuracy, which also made assembly easier.

The quilt turned out great and was well received by the customer. This quilt went together well and I wouldn’t be surprised to find myself making more of them!

Civil War Cot Quilts

A Civil War reenactor suggested I make some quilts in the style and size of bedding carried by soldiers during the Civil War. I was very interested in this idea and my research found that the Sanitary Commision of that era requested long narrow quilts to fit soldiers’ cots. While traveling, soldiers would roll them lengthwise and ware them over the shoulder, with the ends tied at the waist to be hands free.I saw many styles, but I liked examples of these quilts and decided to make them. I didn’t have a pattern to go by so I guessed.I would imagine women of the time probably did the same. These quilts measure 54”x82” and may be found for sale on eBay,please search for “Civil War Soldier Quilts”.

These quilts are made with 100% cotton fabrics and batting. I’m sure these quilts would be enjoyed by anybody interested in the era,but they could be used for Civil War re-enactments. I heavily machine quilted them in a fan style pattern with a 40wt off white thread. The backings of these quilts are shirting style prints reminiscent of the era. There is a plain white square patch in the center of each block where signatures or sentiments were often penned and my be used the same way now. I would suggest a “Pigma Micron” Archival pen then heat set with an iron after signing.

Large Scrappy Pineapple

This queen sized (88”x103”)Scrappy Pineapple quilt is a much larger version of the lap sized quilts already shown on this blog. I’ll leave out the details of how I made this quilt, but I will say that there are 3,460 little patches of fabric in all those blocks in the top. Wow! This quilt was requested by a person who bought a lap sized version of one of these quilts from me on eBay. It took longer than I expected to complete this one,but I enjoyed making it and just might make another some day.

Sampler Puzzle #6

I’ve completed another sampler puzzle quilt. I really enjoy making these,no two are exactly alike! This one measures 46” x 55” and includes a 2” rod pocket on the upper back for hanging if desired. This quilt has sold on eBay.

I usually pick a block pattern then choose fabrics to create one block at a time. I try not to repeat any block exactly.

This quilt has a dark blue with floral/paisley outer border which I also used as the backing. I used a different dark blue fabric for the binding. This quilt was machine quilted in an all over, edge to edge abstract design with a dark blue thread.

Charming Bear Paw

This bear paw quilt measuring 95”x 111” took a while to make but I’m pleased with how it came out! I chose a navy blue paisley fabric with more of a vintage charm to it to be the focal point. I then used dark green, dark blue and two beige fabrics to create the over all vintage look to the quilt. This quilt sold quickly on eBay.

I machine quilted this one in an all over edge to edge abstract design with a dark blue thread and used Warm n’Natural batting. The backing fabric is also used on the front in the sashing.
